Our Sacred Journey & History

Dr Hilda June Caunt, known to the Church as "June", a very faithful parishioner, wrote "A Journey of Faith: The Anglican Parish of Spearwood, Western Australia.  St Michael and All Angels and the Mission Hall, Mell Road, Spearwood WA."

The Humble Beginnings

What we now know as the church began as the Mission Hall built in 1916 (photo right: opening of the Hall) on Whadjuk Noongar land, which at the end of the 19th century was developed as 'Spearwood Gardens'.  Intended as the first step in a larger vision, built with donated materials and strong community support, the hall became both a worship space and a hub for community life.

Restoration

In 1987, the Reformed Baptist Church purchased the derelict hall and undertook significant restoration, returning it to usable condition by 1990. Though their time there was brief, their work proved pivotal. In 1993, the building was returned to Anglican hands, with it's formal consecration occuring on 29 January 1996 - where it has since continued its life as a place of worship—renewed, reclaimed, and rooted once more in its original calling.

No Place to Call Home

Although plans once included a church and rectory, these were never realised, and the hall remained the sole Anglican presence in Spearwood. Over time, changing demographics and declining membership led to the sale of the land and eventually the hall itself, which fell into disuse and disrepair. For decades, the building stood largely abandoned, and just used as a storage unit — its original purpose all but lost.  From the 1960's onwards, the people of the church had various 'homes' throughout the area - including on the corner of Kerry St & Forrest Rd (where Kerry St school is), at a property on Phoenix Road, and the old Joe Cooper recreation centre, to name just a few places!

New Development

Looking toward the future, our parish is embarking on a phase of new development in 2026. This vision includes expanding our outreach initiatives and enhancing our sacred spaces to better serve the evolving needs of our community, ensuring that our heritage remains a living, breathing part of Spearwood's future.  There will be a significant renovation of the church itself, and new buildings constructed alongside.
